Professor Laith Al-Rubaiy is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at St Mark’s Hospital, London, and an Honorary Professor at Swansea University Medical School.
He graduated from the University of Basra, Iraq, where he ranked first nationally among medical graduates. He was subsequently awarded two highly competitive scholarships to undertake postgraduate medical training, first at the State University of New York in the United States and later at King’s College London. He then moved to Wales to pursue combined clinical and academic training, leading to accreditation in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and General Internal Medicine. Part of his advanced hepatology training was completed at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
Dr Al-Rubaiy joined St Mark’s Hospital as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in 2018. Between 2022 and 2025, he undertook international consultant practice at Healthpoint, an M42 multi-specialty hospital in Abu Dhabi, where he delivered specialist level gastroenterology and hepatology care while remaining actively engaged in research, education, and service development. During this period, he also served as an Adjunct Professor at Khalifa University, contributing to undergraduate and post graduate education. He subsequently rejoined St Mark’s Hospital to continue his consultant and academic roles.
Professor Al-Rubaiy was awarded a PhD from Swansea University School of Medicine for his work on applying health informatics to gastroenterology health services research and clinical trials, with a particular focus on the development and validation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).
He is an award-winning clinician and academic, having received three competitive national and local awards in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Over the course of his career, he has been awarded twelve research grants and two highly competitive international scholarships. In 2017, he was selected as “Young Gastroenterologist of the Year: Emerging Leader” by the British Society of Gastroenterology in recognition of his clinical work, research output, medical education, and national and international collaborations.
He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, 14 case reports, and 37 conference abstracts and presentations, and has contributed to three books or book chapters. His current research focuses on the development and implementation of PROMs, particularly quality-of-life measures in gastroenterology and hepatology, and on integrating digital and information technology solutions into routine NHS clinical care. He is a reviewer for several international journals and funding bodies and continues to publish actively in peer-reviewed journals.
At a national level, he is the zonal lead for the British Society of Gastroenterology International Committee – MENA region. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians- London.
Professor Al-Rubaiy’s clinical practice at St Mark’s Hospital includes the management of a broad range of gastroenterological conditions such as acute and chronic liver diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy as part of routine patient care.
